Homemade Vegan Dog Food |
Here's what we feed our dogs daily
***Updated on 10-7-2019***
NOTE: You do not have to feed your dog a commercial dog food if you feed our homemade food. Just make sure your dogs are a healthy weight and you are feeding them enough calories. Supplement their meals with some raw fruits, veggies, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, homemade dog biscuits, etc.)
And ALWAYS consult with your vet to make sure they understand what kind of diet you plant to feed your dog(s).
6:00 AM: Heaping 1/3-1/2 cup of our homemade food (see recipe below) plus 1/6 cup of V-Dog kibble
12:00 PM:
One serving of fruit (they share 1/2 apple, a few berries, or other fruit) and some low-cal veggies (like a few pieces of red bell pepper, cucumber, carrots, sugar snap peas, beets, etc.). I usually give them 1 T of homemade unsweetened plain soy yogurt or tofu, as well.
6:00 PM:
Heaping 1/3-1/2 cup of our homemade food (see recipe below) plus 1/6 cup of V-Dog kibble
Right after dinner: One homemade Peanut Butter Oat Biscuit
ADDITIONAL SNACKS: Periodically, we also treat them with kale stems, colored bell peppers, carrots, lettuce, spinach, and other raw veggies, as well as occasionally, some air-popped organic popcorn and a small amount of nut butter (peanut or almond) or organic tofu.

Homemade Vegan Dog Food
Made in an electric pressure cooker
THIS RECIPE MAKES about 22-22.5 cups
NOTE: As your dog gets older (over the age of 7), he/she will need more carbohydrate and less protein in their diet. So, we simply replaced the white beans with oats in the recipe when our girls got older. We also started adding 1 can of organic pumpkin and 2 or 3 cooked sweet potatoes into our dog food (after cooking but before freezing it) to reduce the amount of times the girls eat during the day.
1 cup dry organic brown rice
½ cup dry lentils
1 cup garbanzo beans, measured after being soaked or cooked
1 cup great northern or navy beans, measured after being soaked or cooked (replace with 1 cup of oats if your dog is over the age of 7)
1 1-lb bag organic frozen spinach, NOT thawed
1 1-lb bag organic frozen peas, thawed
1 1-lb bag organic frozen green beans, thawed
1 1-lb bag of frozen broccoli or cauliflower (optional but healthy and will extend the food)
1 lb organic carrots, shredded in food processor or chopped small (you can also buy them pre-shredded)
1/2 cup chia seeds
1/2 cup ground flaxseed
7 cups water
1 can of organic pumpkin (optional)
1 1/2 cups cooked sweet potatoes (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Shred carrots in food processor or chop into tiny dice by hand. Transfer to pressure cooker.
Then, change to an S-blade and process cooked or soaked beans to a medium coarseness.
Add to pressure cooker. Add rice, lentils, peas, green beans, broccoli, and spinach plus water.
Cook for 9 minutes with natural release. It can take almost 45 minutes for the pressure to come down and release. Stir in chia seeds and ground flaxseed. If adding, stir in 1 can of organic pumpkin and 2 or 3 cooked sweet potatoes. Cool and put into individual containers with tight lids and freeze for future use.

Thanks for both the recipe and for the heads-up about V-Dog Kibble. I just ordered a bag. I got my Shih Tzu rescue transitioned over to sweet potato jerky for treats and was looking for ALL plant-based food for her. Currently, I am mixing pumpkin, brown rice, flax, and canned "good" dog food. Now I feel confident that I'll be able to get her off the junk. Many thanks!
ReplyDeleteSharlynn...Every dog that has tried our food LOVES it! Wishing you the best! Let me know!
DeleteThanks so much for this recipe! I plant to try it this weekend. I calculated online that this recipe makes 2,748 calories worth of food. Do you have a good way to calculate or know how much to feed a dog per day?
ReplyDeleteOur dogs are 16 lbs. each. We feed them just under 1 cup of homemade food and 2/3 cup V-dog per day, plus they eat a mixture of sweet potato/pumpkin and have a peanut butter oat treat every day. In addition, we feel them various fruits and veggies as little snacks (while we're chopping for meals). Maybe you can figure out what your dog needs by his/her weight from the above info. I hope so!
DeleteWhat are the measurements on the beans prior to soaking/cooking? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks great, thanks! I don't have a pressure cooker. Do you know of another way to cook this? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes! You can use a crockpot or cook it on the stove in a stockpot. You may need to adjust the water. Generally, you need more water for those other options.
DeleteHow much beans? 1....lb/cup...? Looks great - can't wait to try it but need measurement. Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry! It is 1 CUP for each of the types of beans. I just updated this page. That's odd. I thought I had fixed this before. Thank you for your patience.
DeleteI have a Pug also. She is 26 lbs. I am looking for a way to transition her all the way totally to vegan. Your recipe and method sounds good. I have read to be sure they get enough B12, L-Carnitine and Taurine in a vegan diet.Do you know if your diet contains the recommended amount ?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this recipe! Our poodle LOVES it and I'm so happy to get her off the processed junk she was eating. I was just wondering if you have directions for preparing this in a crockpot, we don't have a pressure cooker and I am a novice with our crock pot still!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if my shih tzus will go for this--they love meat, sometimes will eat rice, and peas, asparagus and green beans. They dislike all other veggies. Picky little things. I am going to give it a try though, offering this in small doses. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteVery nice post.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog nice n useful information , it is very helpful for me , I realy appreciate thanks for sharing. I would like to read more information thanks.

thanks
ReplyDeletethanks
ReplyDeleteI always like seeing my pets when they enjoy Bark Box treats, as I am totally sure about its quality.
ReplyDeleteLove this article!! You are an awesome fur baby mom!!
ReplyDeleteI have an Instant Pot and it takes 22 minutes with natural release to get done. Does it not matter if the rice gets done? I'm guessing the beans must get done because they've been coarsely processed? Should I stay with the nine minutes?
ReplyDeleteI am not fully understanding your question. Because it takes so long to come to pressure and come down from pressure, it is really cooking way more than 9 minutes overall. It cooks precisely for us every time.
DeleteThanks! I made it and it turned out great. My dog likes it and eats it before he eats the rest of his food.
DeleteYay!! Send me a photo of your dog eating it sometime. I'd love to post it!
ReplyDeleteWhy do you need to add the kibble? We don’t have vegan kibble in my country. Why I cannot give them the homemade food only?
ReplyDeleteYou can feed homemade only. We just give our girls a little kibble for the crunch and variety. We have several friends who just feed their dogs the homemade food and some raw fruits/veggies and other healthy whole plant foods.
DeleteThe main thing to consider is how your dog's health is. Making sure you are feeding enough calories is essential. Also, our vet told us to always be monitoring their coats and skin because these can show signs of health issues. We haven't seen any so far, and it's been 5 years!
DeleteCan you tell me if this recipe is nutritionally balanced - with all the vitamins and minerals necessary for a healthy dog diet?
ReplyDeleteSheila,
DeleteI cannot tell you what nutritional profile your specific dog needs. I know that my own dogs have been eating this food for more than 5 years, along with raw fruits, veggies, a small amount of V-Dog kibble (which a lot of people who give their dogs this food do NOT feed them), and pumpkin/sweet potatoes daily. I believe (and so does my vet) that our dogs' diet is nutritionally balanced for them. They look super healthy and are thriving well. Again, you would have to try your dog on the food for some time to know, but our vet told us to specifically watch their coats and skin to see if issues popped up (dryness, red patches, etc.), but we never had any issues. In fact, it was quite the opposite (super shiny coats, healthy body weight, reduction in allergies). Also, all of the other people who are feeding this food who have kept in touch with me say they're dogs have improved in many health areas! Let me know how it goes.
Hi, I don't have a pressure cooker so how long will it take to cook in a normal stove top pan please? X
ReplyDeleteHi Mrs Plant,
ReplyDeleteI am assuming each of your dogs ate 1/3 c of this recipe with a 1/4 c v-dog each dog twice a day as well as 1/3 c sweet potato and pumpkin for each dog (I would like to know how you made this - equal parts of each and did you cook them - did you use can pumpkin - what about extra salt, etc. from canned pumpkin?). My three dachies are 13-16 pounds and one has Cushing's disease with low thyroid (she takes meds for this) and another is starting to act like the first one I mentioned before in that she is drinking more and urinating more than she used to (we will be taking her to the Vet this week). I am trying an organic vegan diet like yours with the hopes their bodies will heal as I can't believe these symptoms are not food related. Years ago with other dachies, they suddenly started having a lot of bladder infections after switching to a new dog food and though my Vet said it was diet related, I switched dog food again and it stopped. So please just clarify that you mean the food portions are per dog and please tell me how you gave them sweet potatoes and pumpkin - raw/cooked (cooking time and temp) and how much of each in a recipe - thanks, Jan
Jan...Please write me a quick email at mrsplantintexas@gmail.com. I will call you to speak specifically about this.
DeleteOh my goodness! My pug, Max, loves this food! I made it late last night and he had some this morning. He "licked the platter clean!!!" haha! Next up is those yummy dog biscuits! Thanks for sharing your recipe! Tina
ReplyDeleteThat is AWESOME news! Please e-mail me a picture of Max at mrsplantintexas@gmail.com!
DeleteDo you have a general measurement for how many lbs. your dog is? I am trying to figure out how much to feed my two 65 lb. dogs per day without the v-dog substitute. We would love to feed our dogs healthy food instead of the commercial stuff.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs weigh only 16.5 lbs each, so I am not sure how much for your size dog. You might look up how many calories your dogs need per day and calculate the total calories for the batch and divide by their caloric needs.
DeleteHi I just found your website for vegan dog food!
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me if your dogs are still really healthy on this diet since you first put them on in 2012?
Also do you also supplement them with anything else besides the V-dog?
And do you find this much cheaper and healthier to make your own recipe for your pups?
Could you also tell me what you do to keep their teeth clean?
I am just trying to find more natural ways to take care of my pups and I love that your dogs look so healthy. Thanks for your help.
Please message me with your e-mail address. I will set up a call with you to answer all of your questions.
